Why Cuil will not succeed

The latest in a long line of failed Google-killing search engines Cuil will fail (in the business sense, not the FAIL meme) because it's too slow. Take a look at a Cuil search for corey gilmore – 21 requests, 155kb with a primed cache, load time of 28.04 seconds. It took over a minute the first time I searched, so I'm doing them a tremendous favor using a primed cache. I rarely go back to a site if it takes a minute to load, and I don't think I've ever gone back to a search engine that slow when there are faster alternatives.

Now here's a Google search for corey gilmore.

4 requests, 15KB with primed cache, 250 milliseconds. The size of the Google result is a scant 10% of Cuil's and it loads about 90% faster.

To borrow from a legendary Animal House quote, fat, slow and stupid is no way to run a business.
